The mission of Atelier-Museu Júlio Pomar (Lisbon, 1926 – 2018), is to deepen the knowledge of Júlio Pomar’s oeuvre and to divulge it, as well as to foster critical reflections and debates on contemporary art and culture.
Operating in the field of contemporary art and seeking to encompass the plural expressions that form its current corpus, Atelier-Museu is the stage of various exhibitions and events. It seeks to sow the freedom of gaze, critical posture and openness that characterized the author Júlio Pomar.
Atelier-Museu features a programme of exhibitions dedicated to the technical and thematic plurality of Júlio Pomar’s work; an author who has been recognized as a multifaceted artist by several generations.
Atelier-Museum also hosts exhibitions by other Portuguese and international artists, both emerging and established, proposing a dialogue with the space and Júlio Pomar’s oeuvre.
To complement its exhibition activity, Atelier-Museum features a programme of activities linked to critical reflection, such as conferences and talks with artists and curators. The programme produces publications (catalogues and books) which document the activities, as well as critical and poetic essays and research articles. These activities are part of a strategy that sees the museum as a privileged place for encounters between various professionals and the audience, as well as an open multi-perspectival space.
Atelier-Museum Júlio Pomar opened in 2013 and, in 2 January 2015, went on to integrate the network of cultural infrastructures managed by EGEAC – Empresa de Gestão de Equipamentos e Animação Cultural, E.M., S.A., who promote access to the arts and cultural production.
